Ran the Mount Marathon Race, one of the most grueling and popular mountain races in Alaska with 3,022 elevation gain in 1.5 miles. Steep 40-60 percent grades, treacherous footing, scree, shale and downhill STEEP and slick. Came in smack in the middle of the women's division. My goal had been 1:40 so I was pretty much on target. Fell three times on the way down, finished bloody and filthy and incredibly happy.

Temps were in the 80s and most of us Alaskans wilted. The lead women's and men's racers both were treated for dehydration (there are no aid stations along the trail and most prefer not to pack water due to extra weight), and the men's leader was unconscious at the hospital for four hours--brutal! I packed Shot Bloks in her running shorts pockets and popped one every 30 minutes. Man, what a difference that made! Still, I collapsed over the finish line. The woman in front of me threw up. It was that kind of day.

Total mountain race distance: 3.5 miles

Hope to cut my time down to 1:20 next year.

Biked 26 miles at a fast clip along the inlet from Indian to Girdwood and back--beautiful. Saw bear scat but no bruins.

5.5 trail run, continuous hills but decent footing (ran on cross-country trail system). Medium pace but booked it up the hills. Saw a moose with two babies at the half point.

Medium 8.5 minute miles on the track. (Note: I go to bed late in the summer 'cause this is Alaska and it's light most of the night and I love, love, love to take off hiking around 9 p.m. and get back around midnight. Standing up on top of a mountain in that lavendar twilight is like nothing else.)

Nine miles over a rough mountain trail, lots of killer hills (one a mile long), upraised roots, fallen trees, mud, sharp rocks. Steady pace but struggled the last two miles. Saw a small black bear scamper off the trail on the way back--scary but kind of neat. Great run, no one else around; I was all alone after the mile marker.

Eight miles, medium-fast pace, felt great the whole way. Anchorage has almost 200 miles of paved bike trails, most away from the road, and it's a perfect place to run in town without really seeing much of town. Did see a scrawny teenage moose.

Race: Knoya Ridge (4.5 Miles) 01:08:11

4.504.500.000.000.009.00

Ran the Knoya Ridge Mountain Race this morning. The race is only to the top only; then we had to run back down again on our own. Rainy weather, lots of rolling hills for the first half, and then we hit the LONG and slow climb to the peak.

Sad news: A 22-year-old runner with a pre-existing heart condition collapsed and died about 400 feet from the finish. It was TERRIBLE. We were all crying as we stood around and waited for the helicopter to deliver his body back to his family. A doctor and nurse who had been running the race administered CPR but couldn't revive him. I can't begin to tell you the surreal feeling of standing of top of a mountain in the middle of nowhwere, the clouds rolling in and all that beauty, and seeing someone's body covered with racers' windbreakers waiting for the helicopter. It was stark and tragic and oh-so-silent. Really makes you respect the wildnerness, and the mountain, and the miracle of our beating hearts.

The race was basically called off after that. My unoffical time was 68 minutes. You can read more about the event at: http://www.adn.com/running/story/869611.html

Felt great, pace was easy to maintain and my stride was smooth. Kicked it up to race pace for the last 3/4 mile. Awesome run.

Race: Arctic Valley Trail Run (4 Miles) 00:49:14, Place overall: 15, Place in age division: 7

I am SO stoked! I placed 7th in the women's division of today's race. Too cool! The race was 4.0 miles, with the first two miles climbing up the Arctic Valley ski slopes, which meant we peaked one mountain, ran down and peaked another. Whew! The wind was so strong it almost knocked me over. Downhill was treacherous at the top and then sloped out so that I was able to run full-blast the last mile. Felt awesome.

The cool thing is that I am getting FASTER! My first mountain race I was in the front of the back of the pack; the second race I was in the middle of the pack; the third I was in the front of the middle of the pack. And today I was in the middle of the lead pack (I'm feeling it right now, too).

In two weeks I'm jumping over to pavement for the Skinny Raven 1/2 marathon. Uh-oh.

Down in Seward for work, a small coastal town in Alaska. Really beautiful except when it's raining. And it rained and rained and rained. Streets were flooded, bridges washed out. Quit after 3.5 miles--was just too miserable and cold.

The rain stopped! Great run along the beach and then up along the highway, which wasn't as great but the way back offered killer views of the bay and mountains. Tide was coming in, the waves rocking hard. Could hear the harbor seals crying from their supper when I passed the SeaLife Center..
