Running Accomplishments:

Bird Ridge Mountain Race, 2009: 70 minutes

Mount Marathon Race, 2009, 1:41

Short-Term Running Goals:

To post faster times in this summer's mountain races plus finish a half marathon at at the end of the summer. Would like to improve my Mt. Marathon time for next year plus run the Moab 33K in February.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I would love to do an ultra-distance race, 50 miles or even 110--oh, oh, oh!

Personal:

Single parent, live in Alaska, LOVE trail running, and the trails here are rough, baby. My dog is my best running companion, since she scares away the bears and moose.

Ran up to the top of Flattop Mountain and back down again, about 2,000 foot elevation gain, was about 10:30 p.m. and moon was just starting to come up over the surrounding peaks. It was SO beautiful. I need to get a camera and start posting some of these scenes. Uphill felt good, downhill was a bit slick in places and was starting to get dark (light is slowly leaving here in Alaska, it's light until about 11:30 or so and I think we're losing about three minutes a day--yikes!).

Oh man, did beginning yoga class, thought: I'm in good shape, how hard can this be? Dear, dear me--I was shaking at the end of 35 minutes, my muscles like jelly plus I worked up quite a sweat and breathing hard too. Yoga is NOT for wimps. Really stretched out my legs and torso and could feel the thigh work--ouch!

Oh man, ran in the rain and got lost at Kincaid, over 60k of interlocking wooded trails, and all are HILLY. I started off strong, running fast speed up and down the hills and slower on the rare flat stretches. Only intended to do 4.5 but ended up doing 7.5 because I kept somehow running in the wrong direction (most of the trails aren't marked). I almost sobbed when I finally found the trailhead leading to where I was parked, I was that tired. Good run though, extra distance forced me to really push it.

Ran Wolverine Peak but had to turn around at the false summit due to rain and low cloud coverage (no way to see the bears, ha, ha). Four miles up to about 3,000 elevation. Rained the whole way but I stayed warm in my Nike thermal running jacket, really great pullover, has sleeves that convert to mittens for high elevation. Was soaking wet but still warm, even in high winds and 50 degree temps. Nice run.

Ran to the top of Flattop Mountain and back, gorgeous evening, pace felt great, saw a moose with a HUGE rack pretty close to the trail on the way down and slipped past as quietly as possible. Almost rutting season, and then the males get totally crazy and will charge anything they see.

Eight miles on the Turnagain Arm Trail, from Potter to the second mile marker past McHugh. Two huge hills on the way and a couple of good grunts on the return. Rest of the run rolling hills plus rough footing--one of my favorite trails.

Intervals on the track--ugh: 8 x 220s at full speed with 220 at 1/4 speed recovery plus extra 1/2 mile at 3/4 speed at the end to kick it up.

Potter to McHugh and back, rough trail, lots of exposed tree roots and lots of rolling hills plus a couple of killers--love it.

Ran trails from Indian Valley to Flattop through the Chugach Mountains trail. The first five miles up hill from sea level to 3,500 feet elevation and then we were in the valley, no one else around, utterly silent and beautiful with the beginning of fall colors. Last 7 miles mostly downhill, with one killer hill at the very end. Trail rough with jutted rock and very thick alders in places but worth every minute. Saw mountain goats, moose and a huge flock of ptarmigan.

Ran up and down Flattop (elevation gain about 2,000 feet) plus extra mile over Powerline Pass Trail. Watched the sunset over the inlet from the top, and it was only about 9:30 p.m. Where has the summer gone? We're losing about five minutes of light a day, sigh, sigh. Still, a nice run. There's nothing like being on a mountain at twilight.
